Healthy alternative = Nabe.

“Have you eaten your dinner already? Come on down for nabe.”
You know I’ll be there. And I did.

I had never really thought that Nabe is a quite healthy food that fills you up good. Whole alot of chinese cabbages, tofu, Enoki & Shimeji mushrooms, Negi (Spring onions), Shabu Shabu Mochi (thin sliced Mochi) and hmm hmm pork slices! All of these were bubbling in a pool of golden true dashi (Bonito soup stock – the core of Japanese flavour!) that’s been prepared with bonito flakes – not from instant bonito dashi mix. Not to be forgotten, we also had a plateful of Ox tongue with Negi Shio (Minced spring onions, salt and sesame oil) condiment.

nabe

After the warming healthy dinner, I had a HUGE bowl of vanilla and Caramel and Honey macadamia ice cream. Even with chocolate sauce. I guess that’ll break even eh. ;p

    @Chinesechic
    Hey thanks for stopping by :) Yeah I actually like winter season better than summer – lot more comfort food to get through the chill days!

    @Trisha
    Thanks Trisha :) Definitely! I’m impatiently waiting for the next excuse to have hotpot/steamboat :)

    @Billy
    Well, I actually had another meal after a few hours later, so I’d say… snack? LOL
    Yeah Bonito Dashi requires quite alot of bonito flakes eh? BUT, it’s just like coffee, you wouldn’t use umami-less left over for anything! (Oh wait, you could make furikake or Fukudani if you REEEEEAAAALLY want to.)

  7. That looks so delicious! And how perfect for this weather too! :) Have you ever tried chankonabe? I’ve heard that is what sumo wrestlers eat (in large quantities) and I’ve always wanted to try it because of that hehe

    家庭内いじめ以外何物でもないな、ソレワ(ばく)
    ピェンロー、って白菜鍋だよねー。
    つか、朝っぱらか肉とか喰ってるワタクシもアレですがな(ばくばく)

    @Lorraine
    Ohh Chankonabe! I’ve never tried it before! it’s often said that Chanko nabe is a nabe version of Okonomi yaki – throw in whatever you like. I loved something called “Kiritanpo” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiritanpo) which is often used in Chanko Nabe.

  9. Ahhh interesting! Like Bukkake Udon? I was surprised that something as regular as nabe was eaten by Sumo wrestlers. I pictured all sorts of things like cream croquettes and katsu – I know they’re athletes but errmm they don’t quite look the same as other athletes :P

    Haha I don’t know how exactly Chanko was invented, but it seems like Nabe is the quickest way to consume alot of carbohydrate food all in one dish. (You know, Mochi, Udon, Rice, meat!) I guess all other fatty food they eat must be just snacks LOL
